Story Overview:

Hanif Kureishi was born in London in 1954. In the short story “My Son the Fanatic” (1994) he writes about the relationship between a father (Parvez) and Son (Ali). Parvez recognizes that Ali has started changing his lifestyle. He withdraws more and more from his surroundings and his room becomes bare. Parvez worries about his son and wonders if Ali is taking drugs. At first Parvez is relieved when he discovers that Ali has turned to religion and is praying daily. Then he finds out that Ali is a fanatic. Consequently, Parvez attempts to reach his son, but Ali is closed. That makes Parvez furious and he slaps Ali, at which point Ali says: "Who is the fanatic now?"
