The author Salman Rushdie was born 1947 in Bombay, India into a middle-class Muslim family. In 1994 he published “East, West”, a collection of short stories which includes “Good Advice Is Rarer than Rubies”.
The storytakes place in Pakistan. Rushdie shows a situation where a Pakistani woman, named Miss Rehana, comes to the British consulate to emigrate to her fiancé in Britain, and Ali an old man gives her the advice to fake a passport, because it is difficult to emigrate legaly. But Miss Rehana gets rejected on purpose. She took his advice and answered all questions wrong so that she did not have to marry a man she does not know, Miss Rhehana wantsto stay in Pakistan and to be independent.
