Doris Lessing was born 1919 as Doris May Taylor in Iran. But 5 years later the family moved to Zimbabwe and worked there as farmers. They were very poor and Lessing spent most of her time strolling through the bush. Because of these conditions Lessings mother fell ill and just stayed in bed all day. Another similarity to the story is that Lessing once burned a hut. Later she became a rather well known communist/feminist writer. Today she lives in London.
